Rick Hale's life-long love affair with popular music began in Fresno, California where he would listen to everything that came in at night on the crystal radio set and whatever the babysitter had.

He modified tube radios later, attaching a bigger speaker cabinet so as to enhance the AM radio sound.

Fresno (honest) was a great top 40 market, maybe because there were two different top 40 AM stations vying for all that baby boomer moolah. Consequently, anything that even sorta charted was played.

He learned to play guitar at about the same time as the early '60s British invasion and enjoyed playing "Pipeline." A lot. He also did the requisite time in little folk song circles at church and church camp and so forth.

In the late '70s, Rick worked with Jerry Liles at the Soundstage in Fresno, editing a local music magazine, which touted the local live scene. Times were tough for working bands then, because of disco, but the scene was good fun.

Throughout the next few years, Rick performed at the annual Gridiron Show in Dallas, Texas

played frat parties and such with a funk band, eventually landing a gig with Rock Residue in Portland, Oregon,

that lasted for almost 10 years. The Rock Residue years were great fun, playing the usual dives but also private parties and memorable New Years eve gigs at the Oregon Coast.

Most recently, Rick sang lead and played rhythm guitar for Murky Waters,

a Blues band based in Philadelphia and played drums with a punkish-pop outfit called

The Untutored Youth.
